Inflammatory cytokines contribute to proatherogenic changes in lipid metabolism by reduction of HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, impairment of its antiinflammatory and antioxidant functions. Therefore, the protective actions of HDL-C can be limited in chronic inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).
