Atherosclerosis represents the most common cause of cardiovascular diseases. A prominent risk factor for atherosclerosis is hyperlipidaemia, i.e. high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) in the circulation. Currently, reducing circulating atherogenic lipoproteins with lipid-lowering medication, such as statins and PCSK9 inhibitors, remains the major strategy to prevent acute cardiovascular events.
