A Comprehensive Review of PCSK9 Inhibitors - PubMed

A Comprehensive Review of PCSK9 Inhibitors - PubMed

Source : https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35593194/

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. A major risk factor for this condition is increased serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels...

Conclusion/Relevance: PCSK9 inhibitors also produce minimal side effects. Myopathy, a common side effect for patients on statins, has been rare in patients on PCSK9 inhibitors. Randomized trials have shown that reduction in LDL-C has translated to clinical benefits even in patients who have not achieved their LDL-C target.

Association between self-reported sleep characteristics and cardiovascular risk factors: weight status and physical activity matter

Source : https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17461391.2022.2081822?journalCode=tejs20

Abstract We analyzed the association between self-reported sleep characteristics and the prevalence of major cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors attending to the potential effect of physical activity (PA) and weight...

Conclusion/Relevance: The present findings support the need for maintaining optimal PA levels and weight status in order to minimize the CVD risk associated with poor sleep quantity or quality.

Treatment of Familial Hypercholesterolemia with Intracranial Xanthoma: Case Report

Source : https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fsurg.2022.875422/full

Department of Neurosurgery, West China Hospital, Si chuan University Chengdu, China Intracranial xanthoma is a rare benign intracranial tumor. It often occurs in patients with hyperlipidemia. Intracranial xanthomas grow slowly,...

Relevance: Intracranial xanthoma is a rare benign intracranial tumor. It often occurs in patients with hyperlipidemia. Intracranial xanthomas grow slowly, and clinical symptoms only appear when the mass compresses the surrounding tissues, so early diagnosis of the disease is difficult.

Conclusion/Relevance: The objectives of the present manuscript are to comprehensively review the knowns and unknowns of the complexities of Lp(a) metabolism with a focus on apo(a) biosynthesis in hepatocytes, Lp(a) assembly, and Lp(a) plasma clearance and catabolism. We also discuss the controversy surrounding the exact role of the LDL receptor...

Updated Understanding of the Crosstalk Between Glucose/Insulin and Cholesterol Metabolism

Source : https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcvm.2022.879355/full

Glucose and cholesterol engage in almost all human physiological activities. As the primary energy substance, glucose can be assimilated and converted into diverse essential substances, including cholesterol. Cholesterol is mainly...

Relevance: This review would briefly summarize the mechanisms of glucose/insulin-stimulated cholesterol biosynthesis and uptake, and discuss the effect and mechanisms of lipid-lowering drugs and genetic mutations on glucose homeostasis, aiming to help better understand the intricate relationship between glucose and cholesterol metabolism.
